Future Reality Tree

Turns relationships, patterns, and leverage points into a tangible result by formulating the planned change, deriving desired effects, and refining and safeguarding the solution.

Core question
Do the planned changes plausibly lead to desired effects, and which negative branches must be protected against?
HighWorkshop2-4 h
Purpose

The method helps clarify relationships, patterns, and leverage points in a concrete way. It draws relationships, patterns, and feedback loops. The result is captured as a Future Reality Tree, negative branches, and an assumption list.

How it works

The team follows the steps: formulate the planned change, derive desired effects, connect cause-and-effect chains, identify negative branches, and refine and safeguard the solution. Each step is captured visibly. At the end, a Future Reality Tree, negative branches, and an assumption list are available so decisions, tests, or actions can follow directly.

Deep dive

In detail

The Future Reality Tree works forward from planned interventions to expected effects. Every link explains why a measure should trigger a specific effect. At the same time, negative branches are sought, meaning undesirable side effects of the solution. That makes the solution not only attractive but also logically checked and less risky.

Facilitation

Start with a few clear injections and test every chain of effects as a team. Ask actively about side effects, missing prerequisites, and reinforcing logic. Do not record negative branches as rejection of the solution, but as a design hint for a better implementation.
