Leverage Points

Moves relationships, patterns, and leverage toward a concrete result through "introduce the twelve leverage points", "collect planned actions", and "formulate a strategy across multiple levers".

Core question
Which leverage levels address our planned actions, and which higher-level levers would produce stronger impact?
HighWorkshopHalf day
Purpose

Helps clarify relationships, patterns, and leverage in concrete terms. It draws relationships, patterns, and feedback loops. The result is captured as a leverage map and action strategy.

How it works

The team follows the steps "introduce the twelve leverage points", "collect planned actions", "discuss the leverage level for each action", "add higher-level leverage points", and "formulate a strategy across multiple levers". Each step is made visible. At the end, a leverage map and action strategy are available so decisions, tests, or actions can continue directly.

Flow

  1. 1Introduce the twelve leverage points
  2. 2Collect planned actions
  3. 3Discuss the leverage level for each action
  4. 4Add higher-level leverage points
  5. 5Formulate a strategy across multiple levers

Deep dive

In detail

Donella Meadows describes twelve leverage points, ordered from weak to strong, that can be used to intervene in a system. Low-level levers are parameters or buffer sizes, while high-level levers are goals, paradigms, and the ability to transcend paradigms. The method helps expose common false assumptions, such as believing small parameter changes are enough.

Facilitation

Explain the twelve leverage points briefly and give examples. Have the team classify actions one by one and discuss what higher-level levers would address.
