Innovation Process model

Double Diamond

Double Diamond structures innovation through divergent and convergent Discover, Define, Develop, and Deliver.

The four phases are not a linear gate process. Teams diverge and converge repeatedly, work people-centred, collaboratively and iteratively, and test the problem as well as solutions.

Double Diamond uses two divergence-convergence cycles across problem and solution spaces. Assessments remain justified and context-bound.

Deep dive

Purpose

For complex problems with a fuzzy situation, the method cleanly separates search space and decision. It first creates breadth in understanding and then focus in elaboration. This brings open questions, problem definition, and solution path into a traceable movement.

How it works

The double diamond structure allows first exploring the diversity of the problem space and then deliberately condensing the solution again. This makes divergence and convergence deliberately alternate instead of producing chaos and commitment at the same time. This makes the method especially useful when teams need to move between analysis, creativity, and implementation.

In detail

Double Diamond works because it deliberately separates exploration and condensation, bringing clarity to complex search movements. The format gains substance when both opening phases produce real material and both closing phases deliver a clear selection or problem definition. What is decisive are the transitions, the quality of the synthesis, and the connectability to implementation, so that the process does not remain stuck at a pretty model picture.

Facilitation

A project that contains both research and solution uncertainty is good for the kickoff, so that both diamonds show their effect. The transitions from broad to focused are formative; they need clear selection criteria and the courage to sharpen. Close with a visible problem statement, a solid solution path, and anchoring in the further delivery process.

The method guide walks execution through 4 phases, timing, 4 pitfalls, and clear stop criteria.
