Contradiction Analysis

Turns ideas, open questions, and testable next steps into a tangible result by naming the improvement goal, stating the worsening side effect, and refining and testing solution ideas.

Core question
Which improvement causes which downside, and which assumption makes the contradiction appear unavoidable?
MediumWorkshop60-120 min
Purpose

The method helps clarify ideas, open questions, and testable next steps in a concrete way. It opens the thinking space, bundles ideas, and leads to testable options. The result is captured as a contradiction statement, abstraction notes, and solution principles.

How it works

The team follows the steps: name the improvement goal, state the worsening side effect, abstract the contradiction, use solution principles or analogies, and refine and test solution ideas. Each step is captured visibly. At the end, a contradiction statement, abstraction notes, and solution principles are available so decisions, tests, or actions can follow directly.

Ideal for

  • Technical target conflicts
  • Product innovation
  • Stalled optimization problems

Not good for

  • Simple root-cause analysis
  • Problems without a target conflict
  • Pure prioritization

Deep dive

In detail

Contradiction Analysis helps when a problem feels like an unavoidable trade-off: more security but longer onboarding, or more speed but less quality. Instead of choosing a middle ground too early, the method precisely states which property should improve and which one might worsen. That tension is then abstracted and explored with principles, analogies, or TRIZ patterns. The work shifts from simple optimization to new solution directions that take both sides of the conflict seriously.

Facilitation

State the contradiction concretely and check whether both sides are truly necessary. Use examples, analogies, or TRIZ principles as thinking stimuli, not as a mechanical answer machine. Collect several solution ideas before judging feasibility.
