Crazy 8s

Turns ideas, open questions, and testable next steps into a tangible result by setting a challenge, starting a timer, and voting or combining ideas.

Core question
Which eight distinct solution directions can we visualize in eight minutes to break fixation on one idea?
LowWorkshop8-15 min
Purpose

The method helps clarify ideas, open questions, and testable next steps concretely. It opens up the thinking space, brings ideas together, and leads to testable options. The result is captured as a sketch set, idea shortlist, and direction options.

How it works

The team follows the steps: set the challenge, start the timer, sketch eight ideas, share briefly, and then vote or combine options. Each step is captured visibly. At the end, a sketch set, idea shortlist, and direction options are available so decisions, tests, or actions can follow directly.

Deep dive

In detail

Crazy 8s uses time pressure and a fixed eight-cell grid to reduce self-censorship and early attachment to a single favorite. Sketches do not need to be pretty; they should quickly make variants, principles, and possible interactions visible. After sketching, participants briefly share them, similar approaches are grouped, and promising directions are selected by dot voting, heat map, or discussion. This yields a broad solution space that can be translated into storyboards, solution sketches, or prototypes.

Facilitation

Prepare a clear guiding question, the right information, and a visible workspace. Plan about 8-15 min with 1-10 people and use the format in a facilitated workshop. The facilitation stays lightweight; short timeboxes, visible intermediate results, and a parking lot for open questions help.
