VRIO Framework

Moves the current situation, opportunities, and strategic options toward a concrete result through "collect resources and capabilities", "answer question V for each resource", and "derive strategic actions".

Core question
Which of our resources are sources of sustainable competitive advantage, and which are only parity or even weakness?
MediumWorkshop90-180 min
Purpose

Helps clarify the current situation, opportunities, and strategic options in concrete terms. It compares strengths, risks, market logic, and courses of action. The result is captured as a VRIO table and strategic actions.

How it works

The team follows the steps "collect resources and capabilities", "answer question V for each resource", "continue with R, then I, then O if yes", "classify as weakness, parity, temporary advantage, or sustainable advantage", and "derive strategic actions". Each step is made visible. At the end, a VRIO table and strategic actions are available so decisions, tests, or actions can continue directly.

Deep dive

In detail

The VRIO Framework by Jay Barney extends the Resource-Based View of strategy. A resource becomes a source of sustainable advantage only when it is valuable, rare, hard to imitate, and actually usable by the organization. It is often used in strategy refresh work after Value Chain Analysis.

Facilitation

Ask in exactly this order: V, then R, then I, then O. As soon as one answer is no, move to the next resource. Bring in an external perspective.
