Review and Sharpen the Business Model

Move from a structured inventory of the business model to a checked, robust sharpening.

Steps4 methods
Time1-2 weeks
FormatHybrid
Outcome

An updated business model, checked against risks, with clearly named strengths and necessary adjustments.

At the end you have

Business Model CanvasValue chain mapVRIO assessmentStress test report

Decision point

You can decide which assumptions of the business model are adjusted or knowingly kept at risk.

Next step

Carry the necessary adjustments into strategy and roadmap planning.

Ideal for

  • Regular strategic review of an existing business model
  • Suspected erosion of competitive advantage
  • Preparation of strategic fundamental decisions

Not good for

  • First formulation of a completely new business model
  • Operational detail decisions without strategic relevance
Preparation

What should be clear before you start

Roles

  • Leadership or strategy owner
  • People with insight into market and competition

Inputs

  • Current business figures
  • Known competitive and market developments

Setup

  • Prepare relevant metrics and market data
  • Plan enough time for four consecutive work steps

Method path

4 methods
  1. 1Business StrategyBusiness Model Canvas

    Business Model Canvas

How does this business model create, deliver and capture value, and which assumption could challenge it first?

    Why this step?

The canvas makes all building blocks of the business model visible at a glance and creates a shared baseline.

Based on the captured building blocks, the actual value chain behind it can be analyzed.

Paper illustration of a Business Model Canvas with nine connected compartments, a few notes and symbols for customers, delivery and economic relationships.
  2. 2Business StrategyValue chain map

    Value Chain Analysis

Which activities and linkages drive cost or differentiation, and where is change worthwhile?

    Why this step?

Value chain analysis shows which activities actually create value and where costs or inefficiencies arise.

The identified value-creating activities are the basis for checking sustainable competitive advantage.

Paper illustration of Value Chain Analysis with its method-specific working model.
  3. 3Business StrategyVRIO assessment

    VRIO Framework

Which resource can sustain what advantage, and what organisation is still missing?

    Why this step?

VRIO separates resources with real strategic value from ones that are interchangeable or easily imitated.

The confirmed competitive advantages are then stress-tested against possible market shifts.

Paper illustration of VRIO Framework with its method-specific working model.
  4. 4Business StrategyStress test report

    Business Model Stress Test

Which parts of the business model fail first under a plausible stressor?

    Why this step?

The stress test shows which assumptions of the business model are most vulnerable before external events do.

The identified weaknesses become concrete adjustments to the business model.

Business Model Canvas: Worksheet

Prepare a model discussion or one selected step. Take your plan and blank canvas worksheet into the work.

# Business Model Canvas: Worksheet

## Question

## Desired outcome
To be confirmed

## Scope
Work through one business model
Time: 60 to 120 minutes for a first draft; further appointments as needed

Complete this worksheet on paper or in your own document during the work.

## Preparation for this scope

### Method setup
- **Materials:** A large nine-field canvas, sticky notes or an editable board, pens and available customer, delivery and cost information.
- **Roles:** One person guides the model question; participants contribute customer, delivery and economic perspectives. A named owner follows up on tests.
- **Advance information:** Collect existing offer descriptions, customer observations, cost categories and revenue assumptions. Record sources and dates; leave unknowns visible.
- **Overall time needed:** A first shared draft may take 60 to 120 minutes. Research and testing are planned as additional work.
- **Setup:** Use one surface per model and one statement per note. Distinguish observations, assumptions and open questions with a written legend; use color as an additional cue.

### Prepare for the work steps

#### Scope: Frame the model
- An offer or model idea
- A concrete decision question

#### Value: Connect customers and value
- Insights about one customer segment
- Existing offers and touchpoints

#### Delivery: Describe delivery
- Customer side of the canvas
- Knowledge of fulfillment and support

#### Coherence: Check economic logic
- Customer and operational model sides
- Known cost categories and payment assumptions

#### Learning: Test critical assumptions
- A coherent canvas
- Labeled assumptions and open questions
