Decision Making

OODA Loop

Turns options, criteria, and risks into a tangible result by observing the situation, interpreting signals and context, and reviewing the effect of each cycle.

Core question
Which observation, orientation, decision, and action is one step ahead in the current loop, and which follow-up loop comes next?

Purpose

The method helps clarify options, criteria, and risks in a concrete way. It separates options, evaluation criteria, and open risks. The result is captured as a situation assessment, decision loop, and action updates.

How it works

The team follows the steps: observe the situation, interpret signals and context, choose an action option, take action, and review the effect before repeating the cycle. Each step is captured visibly. At the end, situation assessments, decision loops, and action updates are available so decisions, tests, or actions can follow directly.

Deep dive

In detail

The OODA Loop makes decision-making visible as a repeated learning cycle. Observations are not translated directly into action but first into orientation: Which patterns, assumptions, experiences, or constraints shape the situation? That is followed by a decision, whose action creates new observations. The strength lies in the speed and quality of orientation, not only in fast execution.

Facilitation

Prepare a visible loop with current signals, assumptions, the decision, and the action. Timebox each cycle and record which observation triggered which decision. After several cycles, run a short review to check whether the orientation still fits.
