Force Field Analysis

Shows driving and restraining forces around a concrete change and designs interventions for the pivotal forces.

Lewin's Force Field Analysis treats the current state as a quasi-equilibrium. Forces receive direction, actor, observable mechanism, and justified relative strength; numbers are ordinal, not physical measurement.

Purpose

In change initiatives, supporting and restraining forces sit at the table at the same time. Force Field Analysis makes these tensions explicit and shows where change can be pushed forward by strengthening or relieving.

How it works

Drivers and restraints are made visible as opposing forces and weighed against each other in strength. This clarifies which interventions have more effect than mere appeals. The focus is on the dynamics of the system, not just the description of the goal.

In detail

Force Field Analysis makes change visible as a field of tension between driving and restraining forces. Forces must be described concretely and as influenceable, not just as a general mood. A pro-con list becomes analysis once it becomes clear which blockage should be weakened or which driver strengthened.

Facilitation

Describe the intended change briefly and concretely before collecting driving and restraining forces. The analysis becomes useful where strong restraining forces get translated into influenceable conditions rather than just being named. Close with a few interventions on the most effective forces and a sequence for implementation.
