Diary Study

Turns observations, needs, and patterns into a tangible result by defining the research focus, creating the diary format and prompts, and analyzing patterns over time.

Core question
What patterns, events, moods, or behavior changes become visible when participants document in a structured way over multiple days, information that a one-time interview cannot capture?
MediumAsync1-4 Wochen
Purpose

The method helps clarify observations, needs, and patterns in a concrete way. It groups observations into patterns, questions, and decisions. The result is captured as diary entries, longitudinal patterns, and an experience timeline.

How it works

The team follows the steps: define the research focus, create the diary format and prompts, onboard participants, collect entries over time, and analyze patterns with follow-up interviews. Each step is captured visibly. At the end, diary entries, longitudinal patterns, and an experience timeline are available so decisions, tests, or actions can follow directly.

Ideal for

  • Habit research
  • Customer journeys over time
  • Mobile and everyday situations

Not good for

  • One-off usability issues
  • Very low participation motivation

Deep dive

In detail

Diary Studies move research from a single interview slot into the participants daily life. Events, feelings, screenshots, or notes are recorded close to the moment before memory smooths them out. The analysis then looks for recurring triggers, contexts, breaks, and habits. That makes it visible how usage develops over time, not only how people describe it afterward.

Facilitation

Prepare clear tasks, example entries, reminders, and a channel for questions. Onboard participants carefully and test the diary format first. Plan follow-up interviews to understand unclear entries and validate patterns.
