Fishbowl Discussion

Turns group input, selection, and decision into a tangible result by clarifying the topic and rules, forming the inner and outer circles, and reviewing insights and tensions.

Core question
Which perspectives, arguments, and differences become visible when a focused inner circle speaks while observers can enter freely by taking a seat?
MediumWorkshop45-90 min
Purpose

The method helps clarify group input, selection, and decision in a concrete way. It turns individual contributions into a visible choice. The result is captured as discussion insights, observed tensions, and follow-up questions.

How it works

The team follows the steps: clarify the topic and rules, form the inner and outer circles, start the discussion in the inner circle, allow turns or observation prompts, and review insights and tensions. Each step is captured visibly. At the end, discussion insights, observed tensions, and follow-up questions are available so decisions, tests, or actions can follow directly.

Deep dive

In detail

Fishbowl Discussion separates speaking and listening in space. The inner circle carries the conversation while the outer circle observes patterns, arguments, and blind spots. In open variants, a free chair can make switching between observing and participating easy. This keeps the discussion focused without excluding the wider group.

Facilitation

Prepare a circle of chairs, clear switching rules, and a strong opening question. Moderate the inner circle lightly but keep an eye on speaking time and respect. End with a debrief from the outer circle so observations are not lost.
